Understanding Hallux Rigidus

For understanding hallux rigidus, you need to know the meaning of these two terms separately. Basically, the term hallux stands for the big toe of your either foot and the term rigidus is associated with the rigidity that is observed in the toe. The condition of hallux rigidus is associated with the joint that is present at the base of the foot and over time, this joint stiffens and hardens, making it impossible for you to move your toe. The condition of hallux rigidus can be quite troubling and you would find that it can make moving and walking quite difficult. Even though hallux rigidus might look like a bunion, these two are completely separate conditions and require the patient to approach different methods of treatment.

The Onset of Hallux Rigidus

The onset of hallux rigidus does not happen instantly and it is a slow process that builds up over some time. The condition of hallux rigidus does not result in immediate stiffness in the foot, it actually builds up in the form of hallux rigidus limitus first. The condition of hallux rigidus limitus is related to the limitation of the movement of big toe. As the condition worsens, it ends up as a case of hallux rigidus. It is important that this case is cared for at the earliest, preferably in the hallux rigidus limitus stage, as the amount of delay in diagnosing the condition would be directly proportional to the damage that would be inflicted on the joint. No matter if it is the case of left hallux rigidus or right hallux rigidus, both the cases are dangerous and require medical attention.
